New frog species for Victoria found in Genoa River

A frog survey of the Genoa River floodplain between Wangarabell and Mallacoota in 2010-2011 discovered the presence of a new species of frog for Victoria: the Bleating Tree Frog, Litoria dentata.

Dr Graeme Gillespie, a consultant working for the Department of Environment and Primary Industries, discovered Bleating Tree Frogs at three sites on farmland along the Genoa River south of the Princes Highway.

The nearest known populations at the time were over 40 kilometres to the north in New South Wales, so this discovery made the Genoa site the most southerly known population for this species, and the only one known from Victoria.
