The Gippsland Plains features some of the region’s most productive farmland although the remnant native vegetation across the plain is scarce and highly fragmented.

The Alpine Peaks local area within the East Gippsland Catchment Management Region comprises the upper catchments of the Mitchell, Nicholson and Tambo rivers.
